Bounded by the mountains and the sea the Principality of Monaco has become over the years a focus of attraction and a popular destination for tourists, well known over the world. With a resident population of around 36.000, of which 8.000 are natives of the Principality, this miniature sovereign state welcomes thousands of visitors annually. The Principality of Monaco is comprised of the ROCHER (Rock) with the Prince’s Palace, overlooking the port, the CONDAMINE, MONEGHETI, MONTE-CARLO and TENAO districts. The new LARVOTO and FONTVIEILLE districts have been built recently.
Monaco’s name seems to be derived from the name of a Ligurian tribe „Monoikos“, settled in the Region in the 6th century BC.
With the initiative of Prince Louis II, the Monaco Grand Prix is held every year on an urban race track since 1929. The drivers complete 78 laps with a total length of 3.3 km, reaching speeds up to 300 km/h.
The world famous masterpieces like The Casino (1863), The Hotel de Paris (1864) and the Café de Paris (1868) were constructed in a quick succession in Monte Carlo.
